Carolina Roller Derby is the original Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) league from Raleigh, North Carolina, formed in January 2004. Operating as a non-profit 501c3 organization run for the skaters, by the skaters, the league brings competitive roller derby to the Triangle area while training for national competition.
The organization showcases the diversity and dedication of modern roller derby, with members including Ph.D.s, Master’s Degrees, businesswomen, medical professionals, artists, teachers, students, and mothers, all of whom commit many hours a week to practice and physical training. The league fields two inter-league travel teams—the Carolina All-Stars and Carolina Bootleggers—that compete against WFTDA teams across the nation.
Unlike traditional banked-track roller derby, Carolina Roller Derby plays on a flat rink surface with hard-hitting take-outs and strategic gameplay rather than theatrical antics, offering fans an up-close view of fast-paced, athletic competition that emphasizes skill and strategy over spectacle.
